The sun beat down on the reflective vests of almost 40 Hyndlanders who took to the streets on Saturday 9th June, to fight dirty and clean up the area. Armed with ‘pickers’ the clean-up team worked hard, spurred on by kind offers of coffee from Hyndland Secondary School, Coia Hairdressers and Kensington Interiors. Only one passer- by took the volunteers to be doing community service, not helped by he name ‘Community Services’ on the Council van!
Encouraged by the Council’s new Clean Glasgow Campaign and by our newly assigned local officer Faisal Yusuf, ECAT Development Officer for Glasgow Community & Safety Services Ltd, Linda Murray of Hyndland Residents’ Association decided to organise the day to tackle the problem at grass roots level. Says Linda, “We know that it is a small minority of people who create these problems and most people have pride in their local area and try hard to keep it clean. We urge everyone to ‘stop before they drop’ and dispose of their refuse in a considerate way. We particularly thank Ian Alexander, Head of Hyndland Secondary School and some of the pupils who took part on Saturday. We would also like to thank Coia and Kensington Interiors for providing coffee - much appreciated.”Following the clean up, volunteers enjoyed lunch ‘al fresco’, giving a very continental feel to a very special place.
Local residents responded positively to the call for action
So much for the douce image of Hyndlanders – they know how to fight dirty.
